In the Mary Poppins 40th Anniversary Edition DVD, there is an animated short called The Cat That Looked At A King that is based on the Mary Poppins stories. In it, the Queen, voiced by Sarah Ferguson, has red hair and wears a pink dress that is very similar to the one Ariel wears when she attends dinner with Eric and Grimsby. Also, the King, voiced by David Ogden Stiers, is seen wearing a shirt very much like the one worn by Eric.

Ariel was the first Disney Princess to be animated in such a way that the lines on her cleavage are visible. This continues for following Disney princesses like Belle and Jasmine.

Originally, Ariel was to have a close friend named Vysonto who is a mutant merman with magical powers. In the final scenes, Vysonto would join in the battle of Ursula. He would protect Ariel by countering the beam emmitted by the trident, which Ursula had acquired. Eventually he would merge himself with his beam to make it more powerful hence sacrificing himself. In the meantime Eric would have more time to finish off Ursula. As we all know, it was not meant to be and Vysonto's design then inspired the character Rikuo from Capcom's Darkstalkers, a series of fighting games.

The movie was originally planned as one of Walt Disney's earliest films. But unforseen circumstances put the project on hold. When the movie was made in the 1980s, they had no idea that The Little Mermaid was one of Walt Disney's favourites. Concidentally the changes the studio made to the story were pretty similar to those that Walt made. They found Walt Disney's script for the movie while the movie was in production.

The dress Carlotta wears is inspired by Cinderella's rags.

Ariel was the first Disney character to be drawn naked from the waist down, although obviously no details beyond her hips can be seen.

The story of The Little Mermaid probably takes place in France as Ariel is seen buying baguettes during the tour of the kingdom, and Chef Louie sings "Les Poissons" instead of "Fish Fish Fish". Although, the latter sounds more catchy...

Ursula's lair is actually known as the Leviathan. The Leviathan is a legendary sea monster and it is used to train eel-men warriors. But in the end the Leviathan has to be killed. Ursula then makes a deal with the eel-men to acquire the carcass, which makes a pretty awesome home.

There is a clear Hidden Mickey among the jumble of words on the contract that Ariel signed.

Jason Marin, Flounder's voice actor, plays Old Man Peabody's son, Sherman, in the first instalment of the Back to the Future trilogy (my favourite movies ever!) Marty McFly crashes into Old Man Peabody's barn and Sherman thinks the DeLorean is a flying saucer from outer space.

There is a very interesting portrait of a couple hung on the wall of the dining room in Eric's castle. The couple looks like Phillip and Aurora of Walt Disney's Sleeping Beauty. This reference is to recognise the fact that Sleeping Beauty was the last fairytale to be produced before The Little Mermaid.
