Welcome to the section where we delve into the characters that make up the Little Mermaid universe. Be it a bit part character or a major one, we'll leave no shell unturned, no coral unexplored. Or at least, we'll try to. :D

Ariel's Sisters
In the movie, Ariel's sisters make their appearance in three different scenes: during the concert at the beginning, at their dressing room halfway through the movie, and at the end during Eric and Ariel's wedding. Although they have minor roles, I've always had a soft spot for them because hey, they're mermaids. You're looking at a person who fast forwards Peter Pan to the mermaid lagoon scene every time, and rewatches that particular scene about ten times before restarting the movie.
The TV series provides us another chance to glimpse King Triton's six other daughters, and through the episodes we are able to get to know them better, although, Arista and Alana more than the rest. But it is through the storybooks that we are able to really know the sisters.
Ariel's sisters get another chance to shine in The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Beginning, but interestingly and curiously, Aquata's not the oldest anymore, Alana is now the vainpot of the lot, and the differences goes on. Whether Disney forgot (or chose to ignore) the series and the books, or that they are trying to establish new personalities for the sisters, we'll never know.
Based on the books and the TV series, here's a detailed look at Ariel's older sisters.

|
Aquata is the eldest of King Triton's seven daughters. Like all older siblings (though in my case, I beg to differ), Aquata is the more responsible and mature sister. She takes care of and watches out for her younger sisters, and tend to be slightly bossy at times. Aquata is a good dancer and she particularly loves ballet.

Andrina is second in the family and she is what you would call, a livewire. She is a bundle of energy and finds it hard to sit still. Andrina is constantly looking for something active to do. She is the most athletic (and competitive) in the family, has a room filled with trophies from sporting events and is constantly reminding everyone in the vicinity that she can do a triple backflip, and do it prettily.

Arista, third in the royal family, has a deep love for seahorses and riding. Her favourite pastime is hanging out at the palace stables, tending to her beloved seahorses (Foamy being her favourite) and riding them in turns. Arista is a popular mermaid; merboys are taken by her kindness and gentle charm.
[Difference between the books and the series: in the series, Arista and Ariel are always at loggerheads. Arista can't stand Ariel's stubbornness and her tendency to be rebellious. Arista believes in placing both fins firmly on the ground, something Ariel can't seem to do.]

Attina is the fourth daughter of King Triton. Growing up, she has always been my favourite, though admittedly it was because of the fact that she possesses a sharp weapon... I mean, a lovely crown on her head. Attina loves to read and write stories and she has a library in the palace! Attina is the most hardworking among the sisters. Whether it's school or music practice, she always works really hard and strive to be the best.

Adella is number five of seven. There is always a vain member in every family, and King Triton's family is not excluded. Adella cares about her appearance a lot, probably a bit too much sometimes. Her sisters tolerate her vanity, and making fun of her seems a daily pastime. Adella has many admirers and tends to change boyfriends rather swiftly.
[Difference between the books and the series: in the series, Adella is different than the rest, appearance-wise. She is voluminous and slightly shorter than her sisters. I like that they go for variety.]

Alana is the second youngest daughter of King Triton. Quiet, kind and gentle, Alana wouldn't hurt a krill. She loves gardening; the grounds surrounding the palace are her labour of love. Alana is a sea animal-lover, and takes care of sick creatures she encounters. She loves to watch the sea plants grow while immersed in her own thoughts.
[Difference between the books and the series: in the series, Alana is quite prepared to break any rule. She loves to party and has contacts with some of the cooler merfolk in Atlantica.]
